TFT Duo Mode: Double-Up Guide and Strategy

    Teamfight Tactics Double-Up Guide

Patch 11.23 marked the release of the long awaited co-op mode for players to enjoy TFT.

While the game mode isn’t the most competitive, it can still be a great way to enjoy a game with a friend.

In this article I’ll be going over everything you need to know about the game mode as well as a strategy for you sweaty players out there.

    How it works

The rules for the game mode are quite simple.

    • You team up with another player.
    • You both share one HP pool. When one person loses, the shared pool drops accordingly.
    • When the shared pool would drop to 0, it instead drops to 1 HP.
    • Another loss at 1 HP will result in a loss.

Simple right? Well, there’s a little more to it.

    Assist Mechanics

In this game mode, there are three different ways you can help your teammate.

    1. Assisting in Fights

    TFT Duo Mode Assist

If you defeat your opponent before your teammate does, after a small delay, your board will hop over to assist your partner. If your teammate is taken down before this delay, you won’t be able to hop over.

Keep in mind that this can also happen for your opponents, which can sometimes even lead to 2v2 fights.

    2. Assist Armories

TFT Duo Mode Assist Armory 1

At two points in the game, armories will open up that will offer you items or gold. Whatever you pick will go to your teammate.

    This happens at rounds:

    • 2-5 and 2-6 (Two item components or 8 gold)
    • 6-2 and 6-3 (Three completed items)

In the first round, one player will give to their teammate, while the next round will do the opposite.

    3. Rune of Allegiance

The last mechanic is the Rune of Allegiance. This is an item that will send over a champion (and any items they are holding) over to your partner.

Don’t worry too much about the items, when your partner receives them, they will separate from the champion.

You will get a total of 3 Runes of Allegiance throughout the game at these rounds:

    • 1-3
    • 4-1
    • 6-1

Use these wisely as they are a limited resource and can help your teammate out a lot.

    Strategy: Four-Cost Meta

So now that you know the rules of the game mode, here’s a strategy that a lot of the top players have been using. This revolves around the Rune of Allegiance and how it makes hitting a 3-star 4-cost unit much easier.

Once you hit level 8 and stabilize, instead of going for level 9, save up your gold on both players. Once you both have a high gold total, you can both roll down for 4-cost units. Hold as many as you see as you roll down. Pick up whatever 4-cost you both are using.

Once you’re done rolling down, you should be able to send over a copy or two. You may even be able to send a 2-star 4-cost to your teammate.

The resulting 3-star 4-cost should be enough to carry you to a first-place finish, unless other players are also doing the same strategy. In which case, it’ll be a battle of titans.

    General Tips

To end this article, I’ll give some general recommendations. However remember that in TFT, context is always key!

    • In the first assist armory, 8 gold is almost always the correct choice. This skyrockets your economy to insane levels. Also since you can share items components now, the other options aren’t as tempting.
    • You have 3 Runes of Allegiance, so don’t be too shy with using them. At the same time, you don’t want to overdo it and be stuck with no way to help your teammate.
    • When possible, try to target a team comp that doesn’t overlap with too many traits that your teammate is looking for.
    • Try to at least send a champion along with an item while using the Rune of Allegiance. If your teammate doesn’t need any items, then it’s fine.
    • The game mode can be a bit stronger than normal lobbies due to the 8 gold assist armory. If everyone’s economy is stronger, be ready to face stronger team comps late game.
    • Playing teams that defeat opponents quickly can be a good choice because this will allow you to go and assist your teammate’s board faster.
    • Slow roll comps can be stronger in Duo due to the Rune of Allegiance, but it may not win late game due to the 4-cost reroll meta.
