    How to Play Proxima Midnight

Welcome back to our weekly review where we’ll be covering Marvel Snap’s latest card, Proxima Midnight, along with the best decks and synergies. I’ll be covering new deck ideas in this article, but to stay up to date, check out our Full Tier List to see any new meta changes.

Proxima Midnight is the last Spotlight Cache card for February, and based on first impressions, she seems to be pretty decent. Her effect is quite good, but she synergizes with the Discard archetype, which isn’t particularly powerful right now.

Let’s get right into the guide.

    Proxima Midnight Effect

    Marvel Snap Proxima Midnight 4-7

When this is discarded, jumps to your lowest-Power location. (that isn’t full)

    Proxima Midnight Analysis

To start things off, if we’re looking only at her stats, 4/7 isn’t terrible, but not great. However, you never will want to actually play her using Energy. If you’re able to discard her, you’re essentially getting 7 free Power on board. With this in mind, Proxima Midnight is a very powerful card.

Any deck that has the tools to discard Proxima Midnight can get a nice Power buff with the free +7 on board. However, there is technically still a cost of losing a card. Discard decks can struggle to have enough cards to play if your discards go poorly. Getting a free 7 Power is good assuming you still can make strong plays toward the end of the game.

Another thing to note is that currently, Discard isn’t in a great spot meta wise. The only high-synergy deck that performs great is Destroy because of how much Power they can output. While Proxima Midnight raises the efficiency of Discard decks, it doesn’t really raise the ceiling.

Because of this, I expect Proxima Midnight to see more experimentation in more “midrange” type decks. You can definitely play Proxima in a pure Discard deck and she will be good, but I don’t expect this deck to move toward the top of the meta.

Cards that Synergize with Proxima Midnight

    Discard Cards

    Marvel Snap Corvus Glaive

Any card that discards cards clearly synergizes with Proxima Midnight. There are plenty of these in the game, both with random or deterministic effects. Depending on the deck you want to play, different discard effects will synergize differently.

If you want to slap Proxima Midnight into a pure Discard deck, that will also work great. However, Proxima Midnight opens up more room for experimentation with smaller Discard engines.

Here’s a list of the Discard effects that synergize in general with Proxima. These cards won’t require specific deck building decisions, as they are random or not too specific.

    • Blade: Discard the rightmost card from your hand
    • Gambit: Discard a card from your hand to destroy a random enemy card
    • Hell Cow: Discard 2 cards from your hand
    • Modok: Discard your hand
    • Moon Knight: Discard a card from each player’s hand
    • Sword Master: Discard a card from your hand
    • Corvus Glaive: Discard 2 cards from your hand to get +1 Max Energy.

Here are a few discard effects that you can try to use as part of a smaller engine:

    • Colleen Wing: Discard the lowest-cost card from your hand
      • If you build your deck to be a majority of high-cost cards, you can consistently discard Proxima with Colleen Wing.
    • Lady Sif: Discard the highest-cost card from your hand
      • Conversely, if Proxima Midnight is the highest-cost card in your deck, you can target her every time.
    • Silver Samurai: Each player discards the lowest-Power card from their hand
      • Same situation, if your deck consists of many high Power cards, you can target discard Proxima easily.

    Storm

    Marvel Snap Storm

On Reveal: Flood this location. Next turn is the last turn cards can be played here.

There is some potential for Proxima to be played in Storm decks. If you discard Proxima, she can still jump to the Flooded location, giving you a total of 9 Power there without too much effort.

    Moon Girl

    Marvel Snap Moon Girl

    On Reveal: Duplicate your hand.

Moon Girl is another interesting combo piece with Proxima. If you’re able to duplicate and discard both Proximas, that’s a 14 Power swing that your opponent might not be expecting.

However, it can definitely be difficult to duplicate and discard both copies effectively. You would need to build your deck to include enough Discard effects with things like Modok or Hell Cow as well.

    Proxima Midnight Decks

For this section, I’ll be going over some decks that synergize with Proxima Midnight.

Keep in mind that these decks are all first impressions, so things can definitely change rapidly. As new discoveries are made, I will be updating our Full Tier List, rather than update this article.

Be sure to check it out to see what the best decks are.

    Proxima Midnight Discard Deck

Marvel Snap Proxima Midnight Discard Deck

First off, let’s take a look at the standard Discard deck with Dracula and Apocalypse. Proxima Midnight slots in very easily to this deck and is quite the upgrade. When playing Modok on either turn 5 or 6, you’re putting down 15 Power while also discarding things like Muramasa Shard, Apocalypse, or Werewolf.

While Proxima is a nice buff for the deck, I wouldn’t consider it a major buff. You’ll likely win more games than before with Discard, but the underlying weaknesses are still there.

    Proxima Midnight Moon Girl Deck

Marvel Snap Proxima Moon Girl She-Hulk Deck

Up next, we have a bit of an experimental list with Moon Girl. This deck also uses Corvus Glaive, who released last week in the Spotlight Caches.

This deck is very similar to the SheNaut lists, except it doesn’t utilize High Evo, Hulk, or Magik. Instead, the deck is trying to get an extra Energy through Corvus Glaive or Psylocke to soak up 6 Energy on turn 5. This way, you’re able to p lay She-Hulk for free on turn 6 alongside other cards.

Moon Girl is there to copy Proxima, She-Hulk, or both in order to facilitate a bigger final turn. Even if you can’t soak 6 Energy on turn 5, you’ll still be able to She-Hulk + Modok on turn 6.

There’s a lot of moving parts in this deck, meaning the consistency will likely be lacking. The deck is also quite expensive, using two newly released Spotlight Cache cards.

    Proxima Midnight Midrange Deck

Marvel Snap Proxima Midnight Midrange Deck

Lastly, here’s a Proxima Midnight deck using the Sera Control package. Currently, Sera Control uses cards like Gladiator and Maximus to gain Power, but this deck swaps those with a Proxima Midnight package. If you have both Zabu and Sera on the board, Hell Cow becomes a 2/8 that potentially Discards Proxima Midnight for a total of 15 Power.

Cards like Echo, Armor, and even Killmonger are all low-costing tech cards that can help empty your hand to buff up Strong Guy. Modok is also in the deck as a last resort to fully discard your hand, but ideally you can rely on Hell Cow to do the discarding work.

    Counters and Weaknesses

All things considered, Proxima Midnight doesn’t really have particular counters. The only thing that can stop Proxima Midnight from jumping is if your Discard card is stopped by something like Cosmo.

Even still, Proxima still has one main weakness, which is not being able to effectively play for 2 lanes. In some games of Marvel Snap, you want to give up on one location to try and win the other two. Because Proxima jumps to your lowest Power location, she generally helps you play for all three lanes.

In most cases, this will be fine, but in some situations, you would have preferred her to jump somewhere else. It’s a minor weakness, but still something to note.

    Should You Buy Proxima Midnight?

Overall, I would rate Proxima Midnight a 5/10.

In my initial Spotlight Cache Review, I rated Proxima Midnight a 6/10. After thinking about it more, I think I’m going to change my impression to a 5.

While there is potential for decks to play her, I don’t expect her to impact the meta as much as other cards. Even still, she likely will be an upgrade to Discard decks, albeit slight.

With the current meta, Discard seems to need a lot more tools to compete as a high synergy deck. If we look at Proxima Midnight as part of a smaller engine, she needs more tools to get going compared to something like Annihilus.

Overall, I don’t think Proxima is a bad card. I actually think she’s quite good. In context, however, I don’t think she would be a valuable card to open with Caches or purchase with Tokens.
