How to Play: Spider Aggro (A Curious Journey)

    Hey guys NicMakesPlays here.

Today I’m going to go over the current iteration of Spider Aggro that is doing amazing in Masters.

This deck is one of the most important decks for budget players and it’s good every season.

It also does well without using any cards from Bandle City.

    Goal of Deck and Mulligans

The goal of this deck is to go wide with cheap units to gain board control and put on damage in the early game.

Then after your opponent regains board control, you finish them off with burn spells.

This deck can easily chip in huge damage due to its Fearsome, Spider swarm, and Elise’s level up.

NicMakesPlays Spider Aggro (LoR Mulligan 1)

In this deck, you want to mulligan for as many one drops as possible, as well as Elise and House Spider. This allows you to swarm the board in the early game so you have more attackers than your opponent has blockers.

You want to mulligan away all your burn spells and draw them after your opponent regains field control.

    Precious Pet / Legion Rearguard

    Legon Rearguard (LoR Card)

Precious Pet and Legion Rearguard are two of your one drops for the deck. Precious Pet allows you to chip away 2 damage against matchups that have one drop blockers, due to its Fearsome. Precious Pet is also a Spider that helps level Elise. Legion Rearguard pushes 3 damage turn one and is also resilient to removal. Most removal spells that can be used turn one are cards such as Thermogenic Beam and Group Shout, which Legion Rearguard can survive on turn one.

    Elise / House Spider

Elise level 1 (LoR Card)House Spider (LoR card)

Elise and House Spider are your two drops of the deck. Both of these cards allow you to swarm and have more attackers than your opponent has blockers. Elise is a 2|3 with Fearsome that summons a 1|1 Spider when she attacks. Elise usually chips in for two damage and the Spider can whittle away the enemies health or help work towards Elise’s level up condition. House Spider plays a similar role to Elise by summoning two Spiders without even having to attack. This also help you go wider than your opponent and level up Elise.

    Frenzied Skitterer / Stygian Onlooker

Frenzied Skitterer (LoR Card)stygian onlooker jpg

Frenzied Skitterer and Stygian Onlooker are two Fearsome units that allow you to continue putting pressure on your opponent. Frenzied Skitterer buffs all of your Spider units +1|0, which is particularly strong since this deck can easily go wide. Frenzied Skitterer also grants all enemy units -1|0 so it’s harder for them to trade and block your Fearsome units. Stygian Onlooker is a cheap 1 mana card that can put on a lot of pressure. If they don’t have a blocker for him then he can deal 4 damage, which is as much as a Decimate.

    Doombeast / Imperial Demolitionist

Doombeast (LoR card)Imperial Demolitionist (LoR Card)

Doombeast and Imperial Demolitionist are two units that give you burn reach, which is particularly strong in multiples off Stalking Shadows. Doombeast allows you to heal two health while also dealing two damage to your opponent. This is great to find lethal and swing the tempo in your favor against Aggro mirrors. Imperial Demolitionist deals 2 damage for only two mana so it’s easy to play multiple in one turn to burn for game.

    Decimate / Noxian Fervor

    Decimate (LoR card)noxian fervor jpg

Decimate and Noxian Fervor are your burn spells of the deck. Decimate is your most powerful burn spell, dealing 4 direct damage for 5 mana. After you have chipped away a ton of damage with your units you can easily finish the game with a Decimate or two. Noxian Fervor only deals 3 damage, but is much more versatile. This card can be used to burn for game, deal 3 to a unit, or dodge Lifesteal through phantom blocking.

    Good Matchups

This deck is great against Pantheon and Yuumi decks that commit hard into one unit. It’s easy to go wide against them and put out 3-4 more attackers than they have blockers.

By the time they stabilize they are easily in range to die to burn spells. In these matchups you just want to mulligan for as many cheap units as possible to put on damage in the early game.

    Bad Matchups

Bad matchups are decks like Darkness that have tons of one damage pings and healing. The way to beat these matchups is to mulligan for cards with higher health like Legion Rearguard and Elise.

These cards are harder to kill and take multiple pings to be dealt with. Your opponent has to use more mana to stop your damage than you use to deal it, so the tempo is in your favor.

    Tech Choices

This deck can cut Legion Grenadier or a Stalking Shadows for tech cards

Brother’s Bond – This card helps buff your units when you go wide for favorable trades and to push more damage.

    Brothers' Bond (LoR Card)

Mark of the Isles – This card helps your units live through kill spells and then push even more damage.

Mark of the Isles (LoR Card)

Unspeakable Horror – This card helps deal 1 damage to units or the nexus and then refuel for next turn.

    Unspeakable Horror (LoR Card)
