Call of the Mountain LoR Card Impressions: Freljord (Behold, Face of the Old Ones, and More)

Our Thoughts on the New Freljord Cards (Call of the Mountain)

The trolls are going to war for Freljord in the latest reveal for Call of the Mountain!

    The newest Freljord cards are:

    • Faces of the Old Ones (follower)
    • Troll Scavenger (follower)
    • Troll Ravenger (follower)
    • Uzgar the Ancient (follower)
    • Troll Chant (spell)
    • Call the Wild (spell)

In this article, NicMakesPlays, one of our Glimpse Beyond experts, gives his initial thoughts on each of the cards.

    New Keyword: Behold

    behold new keyword

Behold is the latest keyword mechanic to be introduced in the Call of the Mountain set and it’s included in three of the six new cards.

It’s a pretty simple mechanic that seems easy to proc since the card only needs to be in hand or in play.

Its viability will largely depend on how niche the required type is. For example, in this particular reveal package, all the Behold cards require you to have 8+ cost cards to proc it.

    Face of the Old Ones

faces of the old ones reveal

    • Face of the Old Ones
      • 2 mana 0|2
      • Text – Round Start: If you Behold an 8+ cost card, get an extra mana gem this round.

NicMakesPlays: This can either be a 3 of or a 0 of depending on how reliable ramp is. It can be hit or miss because having an 8+ drop in your opening causes a bricky hand, but at the same time, this is the ramp card that has the most potential so far when it works out.

    Troll Scavenger

    troll scavenger reveal

    • Troll Scavenger
      • 2 mana 1|3
      • Text – When I’m summoned, if you Behold an 8+ cost card, grant me +3|+0.

NicMakesPlays: Troll Scavenger is a 4/3 for 2 if you have an 8+ drop and will have synergy with Trundle from being a “Troll.” This will probably see play in all Troll decks and causes a big threat on turn 2 that a lot of decks can’t deal with.

    Troll Ravager

    troll ravager reveal

    • Troll Ravager
      • 4 mana 3|5
      • Text – When I’m summoned, if you Behold an 8+ cost card, grant me Regeneration.

NicMakesPlays: Troll Ravager is good if you need more Troll cards but I would rather play Wolfrider on turn 4 in a ramp deck.

    Uzgar the Ancient

    uzgar the ancient reveal

    • Uzgar the Ancient
      • 8 mana 7|7
      • Challenger, Regeneration

NicMakesPlays: Uzgar the Ancient could be good depending on the rest of the cards that are shown but he competes against Tryndamere and Tuskraider for a deck slot. If you want another 8 drop for the Behold mechanic but don’t want to commit a champ slot for Tryndamere or Sejuani, then Uzgar can fit the spot.

    Troll Chant

    troll chant reveal

    • Troll Chant
      • 2 mana spell, Burst speed
      • Text – Give an ally +0|+2 to give an enemy -2|-0 this round.

NicMakesPlays: This is one of the best combat tricks in the game. It raises your stats while simultaneously lowering your opponent’s – something that is hard to deal with for many different cards. This can be used outside of combat as a way to beat removal spells or to stop strikes.

    Call of the Wild

    call of the wild reveal

    • Call the Wild
      • 3 mana spell, Burst speed
      • Text – For the top 4 cards in your deck, draw each Yeti, Poro, and Elnuk. Then shuffle the rest of your deck.

NicMakesPlays: Call the Wild may not be that good right now but will get better with every Yeti, Poro, and Elnuk that is released moving forward.

Thanks for reading! Keep an eye out for the rest of our analysis as more cards come out and be sure to revisit our previous impressions for the set.
