1. Pantheon
Pantheon isn’t played as much as he used to be, but he is still one of the strongest champions in the game. Regardless of his role, Pantheon will always be an early game champion. In the mid lane, he uses his early strengths to abuse squishy and weak early game mid laners.
Most mid laners are squishy and immobile early. Pantheon is generally picked into these champions so he can get kills and shut down the enemy laner. Although, he is also a great pick when your team has multiple AP champions already locked in.
Pantheon has great roaming potential post six, and he can push the wave quickly before looking to use his Ultimate to help his allies elsewhere on the map. He can even use his Ultimate to catch the enemy out of position too far up in the lane.
Tips and Tricks:
- Take note that your kill pressure doesn’t have too much of an impact in the lane. Expect the enemy Mid laner to have more kill pressure once you both hit level 6.
- When laning against a ranged champion, do not let them poke you down. If you get poked down, you’ll start to fall behind in CS and you may even have to recall. You’ll then fall behind in CS and XP.
- If you can’t kill the enemy Mid laner, don’t be afraid to roam with your Ultimate. Getting your allies ahead through roaming is a great way of winning the game. Before roaming, push the minion wave into the enemy’s tower so they cannot follow you immediately.
2. Cho’Gath
Cho’Gath is a straight-up monster when he is ahead. In bad matchups, he scales; in good matchups, he takes over the map. He is a strong early game champion thanks to his strong wave clear with his Q, W and E, which he can use to keep the enemy pushed into their tower.
At level 6, he can execute enemies on low health with his Ultimate. He can also do a surprising amount of damage with his full basic combo, and it surprises even the best players in the game.
The thing with Cho’Gath is that he is pretty hard to kill thanks to the built-in sustain he gets from killing minions. If he falls behind, he can build full tank and be incredibly hard to kill: soaking tons of damage for his team.
Tips and Tricks:
- Use your Q slightly behind the enemy rather than on their current location to make it harder for them to dodge it.
- Wait for the marker before pressing your Ultimate. Don’t use it unless the marker appears.
- Whenever your Q or R is up, don’t automatically use either one of them unless you’re certain that the enemy isn’t a threat to you. Otherwise, the enemy may wait for you to use either one of these abilities and then play aggressive while it’s on cooldown.
3. Akali
Akali is one of the strongest champions in the early game thanks to her high early game damage and overall mobility. She can run circles around you while dealing damage with her Q, autos and her Passive.
A good Akali will play around her shroud, which can be highly obnoxious as it makes her hard to see. Dodging and weaving in and out of vision to deal damage to you while taking little to no damage.
At level 6, Akali’s kill pressure intensifies, and she can easily all-in any squishy mid laner if they overextend or if she gets a gank. With even the smallest of leads, Akali can quickly snowball it into a much larger, much scarier lead.
Tips and Tricks:
- Keep a constant eye on your energy levels and avoid trading unless you have a lot of energy to spare.
- In team fights, look to assassinate the squishiest member of the enemy’s team. Play around and inside your Shroud to stay alive for longer.
- Be prepared to sacrifice some CS for XP and health. If you’re against a ranged champion, you need to remain healthy at all times otherwise you’ll not be able to trade with them. Stand back when you’re not looking to last hit or trade.
4. Fizz
Fizz is one of the strongest early game melee AP champions in the game. He can all-in anyone from levels 2 onwards with his basic attacks and abilities. Once he hits level 6, he will be even stronger and can all-in anybody who over extends without Flash.
When Fizz gets an early first blood, it allows him to complete his first item quickly. This item’s extra damage allows him to get even more kills over the enemy laner. If he can set the enemy laner behind, he can look to roam and help his allies.
Fizz is very scary once ahead. It’s important that if you’re playing against the Fizz, you do not give him an early kill or two, as he can quickly make it a dozen.
Tips and Tricks:
- Try and go for extended trades as frequently as possible. Focus on using your Q and W to trade with while holding on to your E to escape with.
- Spend your mid-game split pushing and duelling enemies who try to stop you. If you need to group, flank from the side with your Ultimate.
- If you can’t pick up kills in the mid lane, look to roam with your Ultimate.
5. Ahri
The final champion on our list is Ahri. Ahri is one of the most popular champions in the game, and she is definitely in the top 3 most played mid laners in the game. I find it interesting that Ahri is both popular and strong at the same time.
During the laning phase, Ahri has perfect wave clear and can push the wave and poke the enemy simultaneously. While her Q doesn’t deal much damage early, it starts to rack up when she has completed her first component item.
At level 6, her all-in potential increases, and she becomes a lot scarier. She can chase down the enemy laner or use her Ultimate to help her allies via roaming. Ahri is a strong skirmisher, and she is a strong roaming champion.
Tips and Tricks:
- Constantly look to poke and chip away at the enemy’s health bar before looking for the all-in.
- In team fights, look to peel at first. When an enemy steps too far forward or is caught out of position- look to all-in them.
- If you’re not able to kill the enemy in lane, push the wave and roam with your Ultimate. Ahri is really good at roaming, so make sure you’re proactive about it.
